"The internet is slow" can mean five different things. Here's how to tell which one you're actually dealing with, and what fixes it.
Wi-Fi problems are one of the most common reasons we get called out, and they're almost always fixable once we know exactly what's happening. Before assuming you need a whole new setup, check for these five signs.
This is a coverage problem, not a speed problem. Your router has a limited range, and walls, floors, and distance all weaken the signal. The fix is usually a mesh Wi-Fi system (multiple small units placed around the home) or a Wi-Fi extender, rather than replacing the internet plan itself.
This points to either your internet plan being genuinely too slow for how many devices are using it, or an old router that can't keep up with modern speeds even if you're paying for fast internet. Routers over 5-6 years old are a common, overlooked cause here.
When distance isn't the issue, this usually means the router needs a restart (routers can develop the same kind of slowdown a phone does after being on for months without restarting), or there's interference from another device: cordless phones, microwaves, and baby monitors can all interfere with certain Wi-Fi frequencies.
Video calls need a steady, consistent connection more than raw speed. If browsing feels okay but calls freeze, it's often a sign too many devices are competing for the connection at once, or the router needs to be moved to a more central, open location instead of tucked in a closet or behind furniture.
This isn't a technical problem, but it's a real one: if nobody in the house has the current password written down anywhere, every new device becomes its own small crisis. Worth fixing at the same time as anything else: write it down somewhere consistent (or store it in a password manager, see our password manager guide).
Most Wi-Fi frustration comes down to router placement, router age, or too many devices sharing one connection point, not needing to switch internet providers entirely. A quick in-home assessment usually identifies which of these it actually is before spending money on the wrong fix.
We'll test your signal room by room, identify what's actually causing the problem, and fix it, whether that's router placement, a mesh system, or something else entirely.
